Microchipping
Microchipping your pet significantly increases the chances of their safe return if they go missing. Unlike collars, which can be lost or removed, microchips provide a permanent means of identification.
Why Should We Microchip Our Pet?
- Identification: If your pet strays or is stolen, microchipping ensures they can be identified and returned to you, preventing prolonged distress for both you and your pet.
- Permanent ID: Provides a secure proof of identity that cannot be lost or taken off like collar tags.
How Will I Be Reunited with My Pet If They Are Lost or Stolen?
- Registration: Your pet is registered on a national database, such as www.fido.ie or The Irish Kennel Club Database.
- Scanning: Veterinary surgeries and dog pounds have handheld scanners to read the chip, which encodes a unique 15-digit number linked to your contact information.
- Contact: When your pet is scanned, the details are checked against the database, and you will be contacted to reunite with your pet.
What Is a Microchip Like and Where Is It Placed?
- Size: Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice.
- Placement: They are placed beneath the skin, usually between the shoulder blades.
Benefits of Microchipping:
- Reuniting Pets and Owners: Quickly and reliably establish the rightful owner if your pet is lost or there is a dispute over ownership.
- Reduced Stress: The quicker the pet is reunited with their owner, the less stress they endure.
- Veterinary Assistance: Helps vets identify well-loved pets brought in as strays, ensuring timely contact with owners.
Note: A microchip is required when applying for an EU Pet Passport.
Important: Ensure that the microchip is registered in the new owner’s name and contact details when acquiring a new pet.
