Neutering

Neutering is a routine surgery performed under general anaesthetic, typically requiring just a day at our clinic. We recommend neutering your pup at around 6 months of age to increase their chances of a longer, healthier life. Please contact us to book your pup for neutering or for more information.

What Does 'Neutering' Mean?

  • Neutering: General term for surgical procedures to prevent pets from reproducing.
  • Spaying: Neutering a female by removing the uterus and ovaries (ovario-hysterectomy).
  • Castration: Neutering a male by removing the testicles.

Why Should I Neuter My Dog?

  • Health Benefits: Increases lifespan and overall health.
  • Spaying Benefits:
    • Prevents pregnancy and eliminates heat periods.
    • Reduces risks of uterine and ovarian infections and mammary cancer.
    • Prevents unwanted puppies and overpopulation issues.
    • Avoids the inconvenience and mess of biannual heat periods.
  • Castration Benefits:
    • Prevents testicular cancer and may reduce prostate issues.
    • Reduces aggression and roaming and makes training easier.

Does It Hurt?

  • The surgery is painless due to general anaesthetic.
  • Post-operative discomfort is minimal and short-lived.
  • The procedure is straightforward and low-risk.

When Should It Be Done?

  • Recommended at 6 months of age, but can be done at any stage of life.
  • Consult your vet to determine the best timing.

How Long Will My Dog Be at the Vets?

  • Typically involves just a day at our practice.
  • Stitches are removed after 10-12 days, marking full recovery.

What Happens When My Bitch Comes Into Heat?

  • Occurs twice a year, lasting 3-4 weeks.
  • Requires separation from male dogs to prevent unwanted pregnancies.
  • Heat periods are messy and inconvenient.

Common Excuses for Not Neutering

  • “My dog will get fat or lazy”:
    • Weight gain is due to overfeeding and lack of exercise, not neutering.
  • “Shouldn’t a female dog have one litter first?”:
    • There are no benefits; it poses health risks and finding homes for puppies is difficult.
  • “Spaying and Neutering isn’t natural”:
    • Domesticated animals depend on us, making us responsible for their well-being.
  • “We can sell the litter and make money”:
    • Raising a litter is costly, often consuming any potential profit.
  • “I am concerned about my pet undergoing anaesthesia”:
    • Modern anaesthetics are very safe; the health benefits of neutering outweigh the risks.
